BUSINESS CONSULTING
What Should You Look for When Selecting a Business Consultant?

Selecting the right business consultant
Choosing the right business consultant out of all the business consultants out there might seem quite daunting. Where do you begin? How do you decide? It might seem that you must be prepared to spend a lot of time, when time is probably the last thing you have to spend!
To make your work easier, here’s a list of the important things you should consider when you are selecting a business consultant. Use this list as your guide, and it will make your search more efficient and effective.
Experience
Check the experience of the individual thoroughly. Does he have experience in your industry? In businesses of similar sizes? With the types of issues you are hoping to solve? Before you ever get to the point of meeting face-to-face and requesting references (Yes, you should request references), conduct your own research. What type of information is available on the Internet about this consultant? Has he authored any articles? What types of businesses and people is he connected to on LinkedIn? What types of testimonials and online reviews are available?
Compatibility
Since you will be working with a business consultant on a regular basis, check his compatibility with you. Do you share the same principles and values? While you should not be looking to hire a “yes” man, if the individual doesn’t agree with your fundamental principles and values, it is unlikely your relationship will be positive. Incompatible people rarely make things work. If both of you gel well, you have a good chance of achieving positive results.
Coaching Skills
The business consultant you hire should also be good a business coach. He must be able to guide not only the technical aspects of the business, but the people as well.- People who listen to what you say will add more value to your business than people who talk more. It’s a fundamental underpinning of good coaching and it’s difficult to do! As counter-intuitive as it may seem, good listeners bring more value and ultimately have the highest probability of ensuring business growth.
Communication
Excellent communication skills are very important. Ultimately, strategic success is driven by you and your team, not the consultant. So it is imperative that the business consultant not only be able to craft a solution but also communicate it in such a way that it becomes actionable.
